In keeping with tradition, the news was displayed on an easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

The news was greeted with cheers outside both the London hospital and the palace.

The baby boy is third in line to the throne.

The royal couple are to appear outside the hospital with their son, before waiting media.

The Prince of Wales said he and the Duchess of Cornwall were "overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.

"It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," he added.

Considering the little boy is above the normal baby weight can we say 'He's King Size'? Once again congratulations, I'm doubly glad it's a boy. PS I'm a Royalist if anyone hasn't noticed.

copperjohn3 - Your views might go down well with Red Ed Miliband but most British people love the Royal family and recognise that this top echelon of society needs are unquestioning support and loyalty.

Many congratulations to the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge on the safe arrival of their son. Now come on and get him named. They must have thought about it.

I say congratulations to Kate but I also congratulate all those other new mums being over shadowed by this event. Just wondering how long we have to suffer all the media hype and comparisons between Kate and Diana.

At a time when we are being encouraged by the government and media to feel contempt for anyone unfortunate enough to not have a job, and to be incensed at the level of state support they receive. It seems perverse that the same media and government are excitedly welcoming the arrival of a child who will never be obliged or expected to find employment, and whose cost to the state will be astronomical in comparison to the single mother with one child in a council flat, or chronically ill person who is repeatedly declared fit for work by the DWP.
