GLOSSOPHOBIA is one of the most common fears in Britain, it has been revealed.

But have no fear, the condition is not a disliking of Gloucester, but a phobia of speaking in public.

Crowds, spiders and flying also feature in the list of the 13 biggest phobias experienced by people.

Respondents to the YouGov survey were asked to rate their fears from ‘not at all’ to ‘very afraid’.

It revealed that most people would be reluctant to take part in cheese rolling at Cooper’s Hill, as the most common phobia is unsurprisingly a fear of heights.

Almost 60 per cent of people said they suffered from some degree of acrophobia, or vertigo as it is more commonly known.

More than half of respondents would avoid a walk in the Forest of Dean if they knew it was home to adders and grass snakes as ophidiophobia – the fear of snakes – is the second most common phobia.

More unusual fears include coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, and cynophobia, the fear of dogs.

Therapies can be used to help people overcome their fears.

Practitioner Lucy Fall, of Gloucester Natural Therapies Clinic, in Kingsholm Road, uses clinical hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy to treat a range of phobias.

“Both are very powerful and effective ways of helping people with their fears,” she said.

“Phobias really can impact on people’s lives.

“Most phobias have been passed down from our parents or come from a traumatic experienced in childhood.

“I have treated many phobias but fear of needles and fear of flying are the most common.

“Hypnotherapy involves going back to re-balance whatever the trauma was by taking the client into a relaxed state and changing how they perceive the particular phobia.

“It can take as little as one session but sometimes it takes longer.”

Here is a list of the 13 biggest phobias:

1. Fear of heights - acrophobia

2. Fear of snakes - ophidiophobia

3. Fear of public speaking - glossophobia

4. Fear of spiders – arachnophobia

5. Fear of small spaces - claustrophobia
