The following is a statement by the Press Secretary to the Queen:

Mrs Michael Tindall today safely delivered a baby girl at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Mr Tindall was present at the birth. The weight of the baby was 7lbs 12oz.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Princess Royal, Captain Mark Phillips and Mike’s parents, Mr Phillip and Mrs Linda Tindall, have been informed and are delighted with the news. The baby’s name will be confirmed in due course.

This baby is the first child for Zara and Mike, the third grandchild for The Princess Royal and the fourth great-grandchild for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, and is 16th line to the Throne.

The Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, was delighted to hear the news as she attended the launch of the Echo and Citizen Age of the Apprentice scheme at Gloucestershire College in Cheltenham.

She said: “As with any other family, it is terrific to know there has been a safe arrival.

“We are proud that she has used the facilities here in Gloucestershire for the birth.

“The new maternity facilities at GRH are truly outstanding.

“I very much wish mother and baby well.”

Rod Macleod, owner of The Brown Jug pub in Bath Road, Cheltenham, where Zara used to occasionally drink when she lived in Shurdington Road, said staff and customers there are delighter for her.

"I’m delighted at the news and sending my best wishes to both mother and father," he added.

Stephen Vaughan, Gloucester Rugby's chief executive, said: "Everyone at the club is delighted to hear the news and, on behalf of all at Gloucester Rugby, I'd like to extend our warmest congratulations.

"Mike and Zara will make terrific parents, and we're pleased to welcome another Gloucester Rugby supporter into the fold."

Mr Tindall, a player-coach at Gloucester Rugby, has not flown out with the squad for their match in Perpignan this weekend.

Associate priest at the couple’s local parish church in Minchinhampton, the Rev Sandy Emery said it was lovely news.

“Certainly Holy Trinity, Minchinhampton, would wish her every good wish on the birth of her first baby. We hope HRH Princess Anne is absolutely delighted too.

“The only sad thing for the father is that she maybe won’t be a rugby player,” Ms Emery said.

Chairman of Stroud District Council, Councillor Dennis Andrewartha, said: “Our congratulations go to the family. As a father myself I know the happiness they must be feeling.”

Bookmakers said Anne was the favourite name, after Zara's mother, at odds of 4/1, with Elizabeth and Zara also among the frontrunners at 5/1 and 6/1 respectively.

Paddy Power listed Sophia at 7/1, while Ava and Emma were at 8/1.

Congratulations to Zara and Mike...and for using the great NHS not a posh private clinic! All the best babies are born at GRH, my two were in 1996 and 1999.
