FOREST Green Rovers finished runners-up at the 2014 ESF Festival of Football Finale tournament, at the University of Warwick Football Centre after finishing second in their group, narrowly behind Charlton Girls.
Forest Green’s success in the Under-14’s girls’ category means the team can look back on the thrilling tournament with pride.
They qualified for the tournament after taking part in the Festival of Football at Butlins, in Minehead, earlier this year.
The team went to the University of Warwick full of confidence, with more than 1,000 teams participating nationwide, finishing runners-up at the grand finale is no mean feat.
Since the first ESF Festival in 1989, ESF has gone on to become the biggest and most prestigious youth football tournament in the UK.
Over 850,000 people have taken part in the festivals over the 25-year period, which now take place at the UK’s premier holiday centres at Butlins and Haven and Europe’s Disneyland Paris resort each year from April to July.
Greg Simonds, from Forest Green Rovers, said: “The whole team is thrilled with our performance over the weekend at the University of Warwick.
“Events like this are a great opportunity for the kids to showcase their talent against some of the top teams in the country but mainly to enjoy themselves. The whole weekend ran seamlessly and hopefully we’ll be back next year to go one step further and come home victorious!”
Martyn Young, at ESF Events, added: “With thousands of talented participants involved, the 2014 ESF Festival of Football has been another highly successful series of events.
“Everybody associated with Forest Green Rovers should be proud of their performance at the finale.
“The event itself continues to go from strength-to-strength and we already have some big plans in place for ESF 2015.”
