Yate Town 3 Cheltenham Town 2

Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yates had a look at North Leigh's prolific striker Matt Taylor in this evening's Gloucestershire Senior Cup final defeat by Yate Town.

The more wily non-League side hit back from a goal down to lead 3-1 with three goals in five minutes at Lodge Road.

Taylor, who has scored 32 league and league cup goals in the Zamaretto League Division One South and West this term, was the pick of a quartet of trialists.

Yates had a second look at Spurs youngster Olumide Durouyjaiye, who was not able to match the standards he set in his previous outing against Bristol Rovers in the semi-finals.

There were also chances to impress for full-back James Richards of Swindon Town and Leicester City wide man Jorrin John, who showed some ability on a difficult surface.

Cheltenham took the lead after 16 minutes when midfielder Joe Turley let fly with a long range effort that cannoned off the underside of the bar, hit goalkeeper Josh Dempsey and bounced into the net.

That seemed to spark Yate into life, but it took them until the final minute of the first half to equalise when Durouyjaiye tripped Niekel Plummer in the penalty area and the big striker picked himself up, dusted himself down and sent Daniel Lloyd-Weston the wrong way from the spot.

It took Yate just 15 seconds of the second half to take the lead, Adie Adams setting up Russ Church, who made no mistake and an own goal from James Fawke made it 3-1 in the 50th minute.

Ethan Moore was denied by a fine save by Dempsey, but Cheltenham set up an interesting finish when substitute Charlie Hitchings smashed in a cracking strike from more than 20 yards in the 83rd minute.

Yate lived dangerously at times, but held on to defeat Cheltenham and lift the cup, just as they did in 2006 at the same ground.

Taylor looked sharp in the box and showed some intelligent movement, but he snatched at his best chance of the match, shooting wide of the near post.

Cheltenham's first team round off their season at relegated Stockport County on Saturday.

Cheltenham Town: D Lloyd-Weston; J Richards (M Williams 54), J Fawke (C Brown 81), J Lee, K Haynes; J John, J Turley, O Durouyjaiye, J Morgan (C Hitchings 73); M Taylor, E Moore. Subs not used: B Poole, B Hadley.

If we would have been set to receive any worthwhile money from it we wouldn't have been playing a midfielder and striker in the centre back positions! Only reason we take part in it is because it's FA rules that every team has to take part in a county cup.

The Lodge Road pitch made Whaddon Road look like Wembley. It looked and sounded like they were playing on concrete. A well-earned win by a very physical team.
