LIZZY Yarnold has won Britain’s first gold medal of the 2014 Winter Olympics in the skeleton.

After three scintillating runs, including a course record of 57.91 the former University of Gloucestershire student led by a staggering 0.78 seconds going into the final run - a huge margin in a sport usually decided by hundredths.

And the 25-year-old did not disappoint, clocking 58.09 to clinch the gold medal by 0.96s.

This is Britain's tenth Winter Olympic gold medal in history and is Team GB's second medal in Sochi, after slopestyle snowboarder Jenny Jones won bronze last Sunday.
