A LARGE DIY store could be built on the outskirts of Gloucester if a planning bid is successful.
Travis Perkins PLC wants to take over the former Teledyne Technologies site in Woodrow Way, Podsmead, and build a 2,482 metre "Wickes" store and four smaller trade units.
The site has been vacant since Teledyne moved to Mitcheldean in 2008.
The application arrived on planners' desks at Gloucester City Council earlier this year, and planning committee members will make their decision next Tuesday.
But the Environment Agency has raised concerns about flooding, and planning officer Louise Follett has recommended to councillors that Travis Perkins be granted an extension to address the issues.
She said: "There is an outstanding objection to this proposal from the Environment Agency on the grounds that the proposed development, in terms of the proposed site levels, would lead to a loss of floodplain.
"This is a fundamental objection that has to be addressed further and much more thoroughly by the applicant.
"I recommend that a reasonable extension of time is given to the applicant to address the Environment Agency's objection."
Lyn Fraley, from the Environment Agency, said: "The proposals would see some beneficial re-alignment of the buildings, however, we advised that the initial site plan would cause an unacceptable loss of additional flood plain storage.
"We have now received revised details and will be advising the council on them in the very near future.
"It is important that redevelopment does not result in an increase in flood risk to anyone else and, where possible, it should lead to a reduction in overall risk to site users and members of the public."
Gloucester City Councillor Jennie Dallimore (Con, Podsmead), said she welcomed the plans.
She said: "I am in favour of this brownfield site being developed and the potential for jobs to be created in the area.
"I am aware there are some concerns about flood alleviation, but I hope the issues can be resolved between the council and developer and I hope the application gets approved."
Although The Citizen repeatedly tried to contact the press office at Travis Perkins PLC, no-one was available for comment.
But in a statement submitted to planners, a spokesman for planning agent The Harris Partnership, said: "The business is always looking for promising sites across the country to develop to house the brands within their portfolio and this site was identified as a desirable position for development.
"In particular the potential for a Wickes DIY store with adjacent, complimentary trade units was identified."
