One of Gloucester's most popular pubs - Varsity - is re-opening on Friday as The Abbey.
The Northgate Street pub, which is owned and operated by the Bramwell Pub Company, has undergone an £140,000 refurbishment and will re-open at 9am under the new 'The Abbey' name.
Designers and builders are still busily transforming the site, making the Abbey 'lighter and brighter.'
The revamp includes new colourful furniture, fabrics and wallpaper along with chandeliers, booth seating, additional dining tables and chairs.
There is also a new 'snug' area with a new fireplace.
An enhanced smoking area in the beer garden is also to be added.
In addition to the new look and the new name, The Abbey will be offering its customers a new menu along with Costa Coffee.
Holly Best, licensee of the Abbey said: “The team and I are delighted that the Abbey is having an investment. It’s one of the more popular venues in the town and it’s vital that we provide our customers with a pub that offers a fantastic relaxing environment in stylish surroundings, coupled with the very best customer service.
“We’ll be open from 9am every day except for Sunday where we open at 11am and we’ll be offering teas, Costa coffee and a host of great dishes from our breakfast menu including warm pancakes with raspberries, yoghurt and oats as well as a hearty English breakfast starting at £1.99."
One of the new menu features is a 'Big Eat' section which includes a 'Monster Pie' filled with BRitish beef and potato and which weighs in at one and a half pounds.
“Sport is still a key focus for us at the Abbey and we have introduced two 60inch TV screens and five other TVs around the pub meaning that customers will be able to see every pass, kick and shot on goal," added Holly.
“We’ve changed the name from Varsity to the Abbey as we did some research and found that Gloucester Cathedral was once an abbey. Our garden leads through to the cathedral so the name the Abbey seemed a natural fit and is in keeping with the history of the city.
“Our aim for the Abbey is to offer the residents and visitors to Gloucester a pub that can be used throughout the day and a pub that they are proud of. We want to cater for our customers across a range of occasions from a morning coffee to a celebratory meal for family and friends, as well a place to relax and enjoy a great night out.”
