The number of jobless people in Gloucestershire rose last month, bucking the national trend.

The county total of jobseekers increased by 260 to 7,892, according to today's figures from the Office for National Statistics.

It was the first jobless increase for some months. Nationally, unemployment in the UK fell by a further 125,000 to 2.34 million.

But the unemployment rate in Gloucestershire at 2.1 per cent is  still more than half a per cent lower than it was a year ago.

The county's unemployment figures, district by district are: Cheltenham: 1,748, up 74; Cotswolds: 572, up 1; Forest of Dean: 1,042, up 5; Gloucester: 2,529, up 101; Stroud: 1,077, up 37; Tewkesbury: 924, up 42.

As more shops or business close what does anyone expect and yet when companies want to come to Gloucester with jobs the idiots at the council say no .. Perhaps if they were unemployed they might understand that any paying job is better then having a high class 'posh' area in a few years! There are not many shops left at the all glory singing Quays, there is a difference between looking in the shops and actually shopping in these shops!
