FAMILY and friends are mourning the loss of two popular young men in a late night car smash near Dursley.

Relatives of Ollie Pain, 18, and passenger Harry Smith, 17, who both died in the crash on a country lane near Michaelwood Services, were yesterday joined in their grief by school students and young farmers.

Ollie, from North Nibley, and Harry, from Dursley, were killed at around 10.55pm on Tuesday in Damery Lane, between Woodford and North Nibley, Gloucestershire Police said.

Force spokeswoman Katy Roberts said: "A red Renault Clio came off the road at Furzeground Wood. It is thought no other vehicles were involved."

The pair "were both characters", said Chris Bateman, 25, former chairman of Sodbury Vale Young Farmers, to which Ollie and Harry belonged.

"They were keen for life. They brought a lot of fun to all of us."

The Reverend Rob Axford, vicar of North Nibley, said he believed the lads were friends from their schooldays at Katharine Lady Berkeley's in Wotton-under-Edge.

"Everybody is just in such a state of shock," Mr Axford said.

Police closed Damery Lane for the rest of the night while they carried out their investigations.

The pair have not been formally identified.

Any witnesses are asked to call police on 101, quoting incident 506 of November 13.

Officers are particularly keen to talk to a woman driving a Suzuki 4x4 who stopped at the scene shortly after the crash.
