TRIBUTES have been paid to Robert Chaplin, who died in a crash in Montpellier.
The 56-year-old from Cheltenham died at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol on Sunday, November 4, following a collision on Montpellier Walk the previous Friday.
He leaves behind his brother Michael, his sister Shirley, dear friend Mary and three nephews.
Bob was born and grew up in Stroud; he went to St. Matthew's Primary School, Cainscross and Archway Comprehensive School, leaving at 16 to start work at Cotstone Products, Ebley before moving on to Redlers Engineering in Cainscross.
He married Mary Nightingale in 1979 and settled happily in Cheltenham.
He worked for Bill Allen Autos, Suffolk Road, for around 20 years. He also worked for various retail companies within Cheltenham.
Bob was involved in fund raising for Sue Ryder Hospice, Leckhampton Court, Cheltenham, as well as other charitable causes.
He enjoyed motorbikes and swimming, was an accomplished platform diver, and loved taking to the top board at Stratford Park Swimming Pool, Gloucester Leisure Centre and Cheltenham Lido.
His brother Michael said: "As kids I remember when he used to prepare to do his 'famous' swallow dive, the whole pool would stop to watch, I literally did look up to him on that top board and think you could be a professional diver."
Bob was a keen gardener and come rain or shine you would always find him tending his and Mary's beloved garden.
Bob liked to visit Bloomers on Great Norwood Street.
He was an avid film fan, and a bit of a 'Trekkie' he loved nothing more than having a night in watching Star Trek with Mary.
Mary said: "Bob enjoyed listening to heavy metal music, he particularly enjoyed following rock group 'The Hamsters'."
