THIS thief stole a worshipper's handbag from church on Christmas Day, leaving her "very distressed and anxious".

Police have released CCTV footage of the theft at 10.10am, while she prayed just a few metres away in St Peter's Church, London Road, Gloucester.

Canon Liam Slattery of St Peter's, said the thief's actions were inexcusable.

"This is a place of safety and sanctuary and this person has not seen the effect of their actions," he said.

PC Christine Pfister said: "This has left the victim feeling very distressed and anxious. Her car keys were in her bag at the time, and so she will no longer drive to church as she is nervous her car may be stolen.

"She also had to call a locksmith out on Christmas Day to change her locks."
