How times have changed at Manchester United.

They are rightly being praised from all sides today for their spirited display which earned them a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.

But that's the point. England's champions 'only' drew with the Germans and are highly unlikely to still be in the competition following next week's second leg.

That's how far United have fallen.

It was not so long ago that any European campaign would have been considered a failure if they did not reach at least the final.

Remember, they won it in 2008 and were runners-up in 2009 and 2011.

Their wretched Premier League campaign means that defeat to Bayern will mean no Champions League football next season.

The worry for United fans is that their absence from Europe's top table could last for a lot longer than 12 months.
