Strictly star Fiona Fullerton has danced to the rescue of a burgled charity shop in Cheltenham.

The Echo told the story of the Emmaus shop in Henrietta Street , which had more than £100 in cash taken in a sneak burglary on Wednesday September 4.

But now local people have rallied round and donated about £270 to the shop, staffed by volunteers, which helps homeless people in Gloucestershire.

And Fiona Fullerton who lives in The Cotswolds and is currently strutting her stuff on Strictly Come Dancing with smoothie Anton Du Beke also made a contribution.

Joint manager of the Emmaus branch, Rob Haddow said: “She covered the whole loss, she gave us £100 which was an amazing thing to do. That’s really kind of her.”

The shop makes about £200 a day of trading its donated furniture and bric-a-brac, so the loss of £100 was a real blow, Mr Haddow added.

The 40-year-old former social worker, who used to be homeless himself before volunteering with Emmaus said all the staff were thrilled not only with Ms Fullerton’s generosity but that of local people with smaller donations.

He said: “We were talking about it last night. We’re just knocked out. Our regular customers were coming in and saying what a terrible thing the theft was and making donations. It’s a real boost after being burgled which was a kick in the teeth.”

And now staff are discussing what to do with the donated cash. Mr Haddow said: “ When we get the final total together, we want to split in half and we’re going to work out what to do with it. We want it to go to two really local good causes. This isn’t a very rich area around here, with St Paul’s nearby, but it’s the local people who have been coming in and making donations. It’s just been completely amazing.”

Police said two men entered the shop between 4pm and 5pm on Wednesady September 4, and one of them entered the staff room and stole about £100 in cash. CCTV images of two men wanted for questioning have been released.

Anyone with any information about the theft, or the men in the CCTV images should contact Gloucestershire Police on 101 quoting incident number 74 of September 4
