When photos of a soul night were posted online, music fan Martin Taylor realised just how much weight he had piled on and was kicked into a new way of life.

Martin weighed in at a belt-busting 24 stone at the time he was snapped wearing his favourite Hawaiian shirt.

Since October he has given up alcohol and switched to a healthy diet in a bid to shed the chins and rekindle his soul.

So far the larger-than-life character has lost almost four stone, but insists he still has some way to go in his epic battle of the bulge.

He said: “We had attended a regular soul event at the Porthcawl Pavilion and, as per usual, lots of photographs were taken.

“On viewing one of the photos online the following morning, I decided enough is enough. I tipped the scales the following Saturday and set about reshaping my life.

“The support I have had has been outstanding. My wife Sue is fantastic. She buys, prepares and cooks fantastic healthy meals.

“Her undying commitment and support is priceless. In the past I have attended Slimming World and found it very useful. But this time we’re attempting to fat bust and get fit our own way.”

Martin has been boosted by his ‘soul fraternity’, with friends rallying round to support his challenge.

He is putting his efforts to good use by being sponsored by his friends and family, and so far has raised an impressive £1,115 for the Pied Piper Appeal, which helps sick children at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Weight loss expert Sam Summerfield, from Longlevens, said: “What Martin is doing is incredible. He is doing something that will benefit him and the lives of others, so really deserves a lot of support.”
