Britain could be celebrating the arrival of the royal baby today or tomorrow, with bookies taking bets on the Duchess giving birth sooner than expected.

While reports suggest Kate’s due date is July 13 or 14, the bookies say she could give birth in the next 48 hours.

William Hill has seen “serious support for the imminent arrival of the most anticipated baby in British history, with July 9th & 10th the new joint favourites at 8/1”.

Spokesman Rupert Adams said: “There is a real belief out there that the palace has sold us a dummy with the 14th and that, in fact, the baby is due any second now!”

Paddy Power also anticipates an early arrival, taking bets of 6/1 on July 9 and 7/1 on the 10th.

The name, sex and hair colour of the royal baby also has the nation gripped, with thousands placing bets.

The bookies are even taking bets on which magazine will get exclusive first picture rights, and at what age the royal child will first be photographed visiting a nightclub.

But the biggest question setting tongues wagging is the name of William and Kate’s firstborn.

A number of bookies suspended betting over the weekend following a flurry of bets on the names Victoria and Alexandra .

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: "We've received some chunky bets on (the name) in the last 24 hours and alarm bells started to ring.

"It's only a matter of time before Kate goes into labour and the money suggests Queen Victoria II is on her way."

William Hill is offering 4/7 the baby is female and 5/4 male.

Alexandra is still the bookies’ favourite girl name at 7/2 at William Hill and 11/2 at Paddy Power, but many believe she could be named after William’s mother – Diana is on at 7/1 at William Hill and 12/1 at Paddy Power.

Elizabeth and Victoria are also 7/1 at Hill and 6/1 and 10/1 at Power respectively.

Charlotte is also in the running – the name is on at 4/1 at Paddy Power and 11/2 at William Hill.

Alice is 10/1 at Paddy Power and 14/1 at William Hill, and Mary 16/1 and 14/1 respectively.

William Hill is also taking bets of 12/1 on Eleanor .

Meanwhile George is currently the leading name for a royal boy, on at 7/1 at Paddy Power and 10/1 at William Hill.

James is on at 6/1 at Power and 12/1 at Hill, and there have been a number of small bets for the baby to be called Andrew , which is now 16/1 from 33/1 at William Hill and 14/1 at Paddy Power.

Arthur and Harold are also in the running, at 16/1 at William Hill.

The chance of a baby girl being named after mum Catherine/Kate stands at 33/1 at William Hill and 40/1 at Paddy Power, and a boy after dad William 40/1 and 50/1.

Or could a boy be named after grandfather Charles? William Hill has the name on at 33/1 and Paddy Power 40/1.

And there’s odds of 50/1 Wills and Kate will keep it in the family by naming a baby girl Carole or Philippa, and 100/1 a boy will be named Harry, says William Hill.

Paddy Power is offering the same odds for Philippa and 66/1 for Carole, but isn’t taking bets on Harry.

Or could a boy be named after Prince Phillip? William Hill is offering 25/1 and Paddy Power 33/1.

Other girls’ names in the running at William Hill include Grace at 20/1, Abigail, Florence and Sophia at 25/1, and Anne and Bethany at 33/1.

Florence is 40/1 at Paddy Power and Anne 50/1.

Frances is on at 20/1 at William Hill and 40/1 at Paddy Power, while John and Louis are on at 25/1 and 40/1 at Hill and Power respectively.

Who's really interested in what it's going to be called? Given it's family heritage it's just another spawn of Incestuous German robber barons that will prevent this country from being a true democracy.
