The entire top floor of a double decker bus was ripped off when the driver went under a bridge too far.

A Swanbrook bus hit the bridge in Hyde Lane, Cheltenham close to the junction of Wymans Lane and Church Road as it travelled towards Bishop's Cleeve this morning.

The bus was empty at the time of the accident and no-one was injured.

Forest of Dean recovery specialists Richard Read attended to lift the roof from the road after police closed the road.

Witness Harriet Tweddle, said: "I was standing waiting for the bus. I saw the bus come down and I thought he's not going to make it. There was a hell of a noise and I ran over to see if anyone was hurt.

"It was only the driver. He was shaken and rather embarrassed and I stayed with Philip."

Richard Webb, 23, said: "The bus driver said he forgot it was a double-decker."

Thank Goodness no one was on the top deck of the bus. Gives Swanbrook an excuse now to run some open top tours in Cheltenham like they have in Bath.
