MARK Harper has "done the right thing" by stepping down as immigration minister, according to his rival for the Forest of Dean's seat in Parliament.
Steve Parry-Hearn, Labour's Parliamentary candidate for the constituency, said: "There are clearly limits to the effectiveness of relying on employer and landlord checks to address illegal immigration if the Government's own spokesperson for them can himself inadvertently fall foul of the requirements.
"We have said the reforms need piloting and their resource assessed – it is somewhat ironic that the immigration minister has added weight to our concerns. He has done the right thing in stepping aside."
Mr Harper quit his ministerial role after discovering a cleaner he employed was working in the UK illegally.
Conservative district councillor for Newent, Len Lawton, said:"His actions prove there are still people of principle in British politics."
