POPULAR pool and snooker club Rileys has closed in Gloucester, but members looking for a new home need not rely on pot luck.

National firm Rileys is closing 25 clubs with the loss of 146 jobs across the country after going into administration.

Although private investors will take on the remaining 625 staff and 78 clubs in the UK, the Gloucester club, in Bristol Road, closed its doors two weeks ago.

A statement on Rileys Gloucester website simply says: "We are sorry, but this club is no longer open. The nearest open clubs to this location are Worcester, Bristol, Newport, Moseley and Birmingham."

Former member James Matthews, of Hucclecote, said: "It's a shame.

"I have been going there on and off for years and it had a good atmosphere."

Top Q Club, in Southbrook Road, of Eastern Avenue, is offering free membership in the wake of its rival club closing. Clive Rodway, director of Top Q Club, said: "Due to the sudden demise of Rileys we are pleased to offer free membership to any former Rileys members.

"We look forward to welcoming them here."

Top Q Club has been in the city for 30 years and already boasts around 3,000 members.

"Anyone interested in joining the club should just contact our co-director Kevin Burton on 01452 501 510," added Mr Rodway.

"We offer a great service and will give all new members a warm welcome."
