Police cordon tape

Police are investigating a serious sexual assault on a woman in Oxstalls Lane in Longlevens in the early hours of Tuesday.

The 19-year-old victim was at the bus stop on Cheltenham Road at around 1.45am when two men appeared from the direction of Estcourt Road, grabbed her and dragged her to Oxstalls Lane, alongside the main entrance to the university campus.

They then seriously sexually assaulted the woman before making off along Oxstalls Lane.

Detective Chief Inspector Alastair Stenner said: "There aren't any words to describe the ordeal the victim has been through.

"We're giving her as much support as we can and doing everything to secure as much evidence as possible.

"My officers are at the scene today conducting searches and looking for forensic clues. We'll also be making house to house inquiries in the area.

"What I need is for everyone to think back to the early hours of Tuesday and call us if you were in the area and think you saw these men or anything unusual or suspicious. Even the smallest detail could be key to identifying these attackers.

"I know the local community will be concerned and we'll be talking to both the university and residents to see how we can provide assistance and support."

Referring to personal safety advice DCI Stenner added: "Just try to be aware of your surroundings and of anyone who may be acting suspiciously.  Do not engage in conversations with strangers and if you are concerned for your safety then contact the police."

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident 298 of January 30.

Alternatively information can also be given anonymously on 0800 555 111, or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. In some cases Crimestoppers offer rewards of up to £1000 where information leads to a conviction.
