Norman Peires’ seven secrets to success

Norman Peires is a wealthy, 65-year-old businessman. An entrepreneur who founded a luxury travel provider and an investment company amongst many other business ventures, Peires has an impressive track record of accomplishments. Here, he shares with us his seven top tips for success.

1. Don’t be afraid to fail.

In both life and business, it’s necessary to take risks. So be prepared for setbacks – they’re not the end of the world. When something goes wrong, find the root of the problem and start fixing it straight away. You can learn something from every failure, and in doing so you will come back stronger.

2. Say yes to every opportunity.

My upbringing encouraged me to approach life in this way. It’s important to treat each day as a learning experience, as you can gain so much by being aware of your environment. Take note of how others deal with challenges and obstacles. And say yes to every opportunity. Take in as much as you can, and acquire new skills and knowledge. As Richard Branson once said, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!”

3. Give back to people.

A lot of business minds seem to be solely driven by money. And yes, you need to make profit to be successful, but there are many different forms of success. Being in a position where you can really help other people reach their own successes in life, no matter how small they may be, is a very powerful place to be. And one that should be treated with great responsibility. My wife Lorna and I have long been supporters of Help for Heroes, and have taken part in events to raise money for the charity, and I have also given backing to a number of young entrepreneurs to get their own businesses off the ground.

4. Go against the grain.

Innovation is key to success in business. To be innovative, you have to be prepared to try something different or come up with something original. All inventors at some point get told they are crazy. But without them, where would we be – we’d never get anywhere. Progress and development in business – and in life in general – is often all about trying out new things. Be brave and follow your instinct. Life is too short!

5. Build up a support network.

You have to be across so much to advance in business. But no matter how well-informed or educated you are, you can’t know everything. It’s critical that you surround yourself with people who can provide help and advice when you most need it. You are much more likely to be successful when you know people are there to support you.

6. Set goals and challenges for yourself.

It’s important to push yourself and have goals to focus on. When you achieve these, you should not be complacent. Always set new ones. It’s important not to sit still. Draft a plan and think carefully about what you want to achieve – today, this week, this month, next year, in 10 years’ time. If you set your goals too low, you won’t achieve great things. Setting ambitious targets may be daunting, but if you are sufficiently driven, motivated and hungry for success you will achieve them.

7. Appreciate your family.

If you’re serious about making it in business, you might feel that you have little time for anything else. But spending time with family and friends is vital, in order to keep you on an even keel. You need to find the right balance between work and home life. This helps you to maintain a focus on what you’re doing – so speak to those who are close to you on a daily basis.
