KEEN to grab a trolley and dash around the aisles, shoppers poured through the doors of the latest new supermarket to open up in the city.

More than 130 new jobs have been filled at the new Kingsway, ASDA that opened for the first time on Monday.

A new Tesco is set to open in Churchdown later this month and a Morrison’s superstore is not far away at the Railway Triangle, providing 350 more jobs.

But it was ASDA’s time to shine this week, with pupils from the Ribston Hall High School greeting shoppers with a song and the opening ceremony conducted by Gloucester Mayor Chris Chatterton.

Pamela Bradley has been living in Quedgeley for more than 50 years and has seen the area grow out of all recognition..

Queuing up from 8am, Pamela was rewarded for her early start with a bouquet of flowers as she was the first shopper through the shiny new doors.

“The first impression is very nice, and that counts for a lot,” she said.

“I usually shop at Tesco or Aldi, but it has been nice to see something different for this area.

“It is far more convenient for me and the store has a good layout.

“I will be coming back.”

Fellow shopper Ann Wings, from Tuffley, was not far behind.

“Competition is good and now this ASDA is open, there will hopefully be some good value offers elsewhere in this area to try and compete,” she said.

“There are lots of families in this area so choice and budget is very important.

“The new store is lovely, big and clean and it is very clear where everything is. The clothes section is an added bonus.”

Store manager Russ Elkins said there are still plenty of jobs up for grabs and is encouraging people from the area to apply.

“This store has employed 130 from this area, and it will help deliver healthy eating at competitive prices,” he said.

“We have 20 vacancies that still need to be filled in departments across the store.

“If anyone is interested, they can download an application form on our website and bring it in to the store.”

I thought Kingsway was referred to by estate agents as 'Quedgeley' now to give it a more upmarket feel, given Kingsway's early troubles when hundreds of un-sold (couldn't sell) houses were sold to housing associations with unfortunate resultant references as 'new Matson' etc. I think Kingsway should be re-named after it's most enthusiastic councellor, Barry Kirby......in that case the new store would be known as 'ASDA BARRYKIRBY'

Why is it called ASDA Quedgeley? maybe because they don't want some of the stigma attached to Kingsway to rub off. And I agree.. it is a tad small in places.. not as big I thought it would be to be honest.

That's a lot of 'thumbs down' for a reasonable question! It's in Kingsway. Why isn't it called Asda Kingsway? Went in there this evening and it's not bad. Bit cramped in places and can foresee stock problems at Christmas because it's actually quite small. Good sized clothes section and nice looking cafe. Sure it will do well.

Tesco are already doing badly as a company whilst Lidl, Aldi and Waitrose thrive.....now it's going to get a lot worse for them in Quedgeley. People of Quedgeley have been waiting over 20 years for this. If you find it's easier to park near the doors at Tesco......you'll know why.

Looks a lot like an Asda.... Curious about why they have called it Asda Quedgeley. Shouldn't it be Asda Kingsway.... Especially as they're making a big deal about it being a milestone for Kingsway!
