Nathan Sykes and bandmate Max George instigated the split of boyband The Wanted.
According to Max, lead singer of the band, he and Nathan were happy for the members to go their own ways after rows over girlfriends and bids for solo careers.
Nathan is one of two band members to be offered a solo deal and on Twitter this weekend he revealed he is already writing songs.
In an interview with The Sun on Sunday, he said that he and Nathan, 20, from Gloucester, were the most ambitious in the band and both wanted to go solo.
He said: "Over the past year, there has been a lot of tension.
"Our personal lives drove us apart."
He said their manager Scooter Braun asked who wanted to take a 'step out' after their Word of Mouth tour and go solo.
"Me and Nathan both said we have other ambitions," said Max.
"We were more prepared than the others... Nathan and I haven't broken any promises either because we're both going to be on the tour."
Scooter, who also manages Justin Bieber, has only signed Max and Nathan as solo artists.
Max said he believes Nathan, a former Ribston Hall pupil, will be the biggest success from the band's split.
Wait I'm coming!! I've literally just written the best song I've ever written in my entire life and I'm recording it. It feels so special ❤️

"He's just a bundle of talent and he's got so much ambition.... he's had his first serious girlfriend with Ariana (Grande).
"We've all known from the start he wanted to go solo."
