GLOUCESTER’S ‘MissFusion’ is preparing to run the London Marathon inspired by her lifelong friend Karen Satherley’s cancer battle.
MissFusion band manager and lead singer, Tania Hamilton will be raising funds for Cancer Research UK when she pounds London’s pavements in April, and she’ll be doing it in honour of Karen who has faced ovarian cancer.
Although Karen has undergone a hysterectomy and operation on her bowel, she has decided that conventional medicine is not for her and has opted for a more unorthodox approach to manage her recovery.
She sticks to a strict healthy eating diet plan and lifestyle change regime, which involves drinking up to 10 juices a day as well as various sessions of acupuncture and hands on healing.
Karen knows that the path she has taken is very different from that which the majority of people would take, and can be seen as very controversial, but is absolutely convinced that this is the right way for her.
“Until someone is in this position themselves, it is very difficult to understand how they might feel or how they might respond when faced with this challenge,” said Karen.
“But for me, it was all about being in control, and doing what I feel and know is absolutely right for me.
“This has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, and I’ve had to face all of my fears and make very challenging choices. But not only have I got my health, I’ve also become a much more rounded person. This is for me, the unexpected gift of cancer.”
Tania has entered the London Marathon under the Golden Bond category of runners, which means she has had to make a pledge of £2,000 sponsorship to be accepted.
With the generosity of the public, family and friends she has already smashed that pledge, raising in excess of £5,000.
Singer and HR adviser Tania has been running since her cross-country school days she shared with Karen, and is currently in an advanced stage of training.
“I’ve always wanted to run the London Marathon”, said Tania.
“For as long as I can remember and I’m sure it must be one of those things that most runners dream about doing, but being able to do this now knowing that the money I raise will go towards helping people like Karen in the future is fantastic.”
Tania who is a regular fundraiser, has to-date raised over £8,000 for Cancer Research UK.
She recently joined forces with Citizen Slim, AKA Martin Taylor, who is raising money for the Pied Piper Appeal and the pair dressed up as Batman and Robin to run along Weston-Super-Mare’s sea front.
“The next event is a ‘ticket-only’ Soul/Motown/Classics night, which is already, ‘souled out’, with live music and a comedian at the Walls Club, Barnwood on 29 March, and I am pleased to say Karen and her family will be attending,” said Tania.
