Hard at work: Dave Roberts from The Laundry Centre

Modern day 'servants' are on the rise thanks to our busy lives and inspiration from Downton Abbey.

Now 1 in 4 people are using some sort of home help to manage their daily chores such as doing the laundry, the gardening or the cleaning.

That compares to 1 in 6 back in 1876.

Popular TV series Downton Abbey, which shows traditional household servants in action, is said to have had a major influence as people juggle working long hours and bringing up a family.

Dave Roberts, from The Laundry Centre, in Gloucester, is in demand for his services. He said: "Everyone is working really hard and people are more aware of quality family time. They don't want to rush around doing domestic chores. They are all doing extra hours to try and support their family. When do you fit in the chores?"

One of Dave's customers said: "It is much easier. We get our laundry back and it is all nice and clean."

Another said: "I work Monday to Friday and it is really convenient for me."
