MICHAEL Wasley showed few signs of debut nerves as he battled gamely against Ding Junhui on his World Championship debut.
On his first Crucible appearance, the 24-year-old Gloucester potter raced into the lead in the first frame before the Chinese world number three battled back to take the frame.
But Wasley then found form to win three of the next four before the experience and talent of Ding began to show.
The two-time UK Champion and 2010 Masters champion won the final four frames of the session to take a 6-3 lead in to the second and final session of the match.
The best of 19-frame match will restart at 2.30pm tomorrow and play to a finish.
