A 50MPH speed limit, road resurfacing and better signage are all on the agenda to tackle speeding issues on a major road.

Stroud MP Neil Carmichael met police and crime commissioner Martin Surl to discuss problems on the A38 near Moreton Valence.

Also in attendance were representatives from Gloucestershire Highways, and district and county councillors Haydn Jones, John Jones and Anthony Blackburn, representing the parishes affected.

Mr Carmichael vowed to work with councillors and police to ensure that a 50mph speed limit was imposed, and that the road was resurfaced.

As part of the project, there will also be the reinforcement of village boundaries in the area surrounding Moreton Valence and the A38, through improved road signage.

Mr Carmichael emphasised the need for teamwork in tackling the issue.

He said: "It is important that we work together with the police to continue improving road safety for both drivers and communities.

"The problem of speeding along the A38 has been an ongoing problem within the constituency and I hope these new measures will tackle the issue head-on.

"I will continue my work with councillors and police commissioner Mr Surl on this project and hope that the results will soon follow."

The group also considered a similar road safety proposal for the junction of the A46 and A4173 at Pitchcombe.

By my calculations there have been about 38 accidents along that stretch of the A38 between 2005 and 2011, with 10 classed as serious and 1 fatal. http://tinyurl.com/krdop7k You can even read a detailed report of each accident as the above website, although you will have to register. The BBC has a version that covers 1999 to 2008 http://tinyurl.com/y8rbjzu There was also a fatal accident in 2002. Or the Department for Transport site, http://tinyurl.com/mqj32ma
