Gloucester's history is steeped in sport and with the city playing host to the Rugby World Cup in 2015, the legacy is certainly going to continue.
Kingsholm will be home to several matches and already there are plans to ensure visitors receive the warmest welcome.
According to the archive, dating as far back as the late 1800s, Kingsholm was a playing field for the college school opposition.
But as we know since then it has become synonymous with the Cherry and Whites with its atmosphere the envy of many teams for its passion for the game.
However, today’s Life and Times photographs show that Gloucester isn’t a one-sport city.
We have a vibrant football scene here but also boxing is a strong sport with deep roots in the city and it still remains popular today.
Martial arts also thrive in Gloucester which has an athletics scene as well which is growing all the time.
Bringing with it healthy competition and lasting friendships, many people recall the tournaments they took part in as some of the most enjoyable times of their school years.
