Why Happy Valley is the best drama on television at the moment

Well, she has certainly come a long way from Raquel on Coronation Street.

Sarah Lancashire has been in some cracking dramas over the years but her role in Happy Valley has got everybody talking.

Without spoiling the plot, she plays police officer Sergeant Catherine Cawood, a divorced mum who is also looking after her daughter's son following her suicide.

The BBC drama set in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire brings together a kidnap plot with Catherine's family's past with compelling results.

This drama doesn't pull any punches and at times it has been uncomfortable to watch to say the least but it is undoubtedly one of the best programmes on television we've seen all year.

And Sarah is fantastic in it. Her character which goes through the mill is utterly believable portraying such a raft of emotions throughout.

Just as Broadchurch created water cooler moments up and down the country, Happy Valley is a series which has really gripped viewers and rightly so.

Episode six of six is on Tuesday night on BBC1 at 9pm but you can still catch previous episodes on iplayer.

It is well worth the watch. And while Olivia Colman certainly deserved her BAFTA recognition recently, let's hope come next year, Sarah Lancashire is polishing off an acceptance speech for best actress because it is definitely a performance worthy of recognition.

I agree with the previous comments, and honslknjklyt is right, don't watch it if you don't like it.

I totally agree Sarah Lancashire is one of the best on TV at the moment. This series is by the same people as "Last Tango in Halifax", which was also brilliant and also starred Sarah. Add to her the equally brilliant Anne Reid (also ex-Corrie, one of Ken Barlow's wives) and Derek Jacobi and you have true TV Gold!

And to think there have been complaints about it being so violent. The "violence" is not stupid or gratuitous, it is part of the programme and it is a shame that those mouthy few ruin things for the rest of us. For those that don't like it, simply don't watch but I think it is fantastic.

'Best Drama on TV at the moment'. I quite agree, it is a long time since anything was so gripping and unmissable. ALL the characters are great, and the story is so well written. Will be sorry when it does end - brilliant television, can we have some more like it please ?
