Branches of Subway in Gloucester are not among 185 nationwide reported to be ditching ham and bacon for halal meat.

The move, which is reported to have been made to appeal to Muslim customers involves dropping bacon and ham in favour of turkey ham and turkey rashers.

But the Citizen can confirm the following branches in Gloucester will not be removing bacon or ham from the menu.

London Road Garage

St Oswald's Park

Whittle Way

Bristol Road

King's Walk

Southgate Street

Barge Arm, Docks

A statement on the company's website said any stores using halal meat would have clear signposts informing customers.

It said: "Due to the growing popularity of the SUBWAY® chain, with the diverse multicultural population across the UK and Ireland, we put a programme in place in 2007 to ensure that the population demographic is taken into account when new store openings are considered in order that we meet consumer demand in each location.

"All our suppliers comply with EU animal welfare legislation as a minimum and we require suppliers of Halal products to adopt the stunning of animals prior to their slaughter. All Halal meats are certified by the appropriate Halal authorities.

"All Halal SUBWAY® stores have numerous signs stating that they serve Halal food. These are situated on the menu panels, nutritional information and in the front window of the store. Details about the locations of Halal stores can be found on the store finder at www.subway.com"

Another disgraceful move by Subway. I am glad I choose to never eat there many years ago. I hope people boycott the chain over their decision to only supply cruelty produce to hundreds of outles. Can anyone point out why they have not been taken to court over their misleading advertising? Eat fresh, what a joke - everything come in frozen. Eat freshly defrosted, yum!

I am deeply offended that a national chain of stores can take such a stand and shout about using meat that has been so cruelly and barbarically slaughtered. This isn't an issue about racism, it is an issue of animal welfare and it is beyond belief that it is even allowed in a so called civilised society. The Government is tiptoeing around this due a religious minority that then plays the racism card. Top vets and the RSPCA have been campaigning for years to end the practice. I truly hope that Subway profits now suffer just as much as the animals used to supply their stores.

I was going to buy a lunch from Brockworth but decided not to use Subway anymore. There are plenty of other sandwich outlets locally owned and not pandering to a medieval method of killing animals.

am i going to be accused in islamphobia for saying what i think. to serve meat that has been brutally killed and for the animal to suffer bad just to please a religion, how can this be allowed. we live in the modern age where humans and animal have rights, some need to grow back bone and outlaw these out dated ways. It is also a joke to be an English person now days, don't people come to the UK for UK lifestyle, so why is it everything we love about living in the UK have to change for non UK persons. i for one will never use subways again.

If it increases their trade then i see no problem with it. If subway feel that they would be losing out on trade (e.g. see London Road branch when it was halal for a period and then reverted back due to loss of trade) then they wouldn't do it. Simple business.

I think this is now getting beyond ridiculous, why do we have to change the way we are, we do not go over to their countries and demand things should be changed to meet our needs or religious beliefs. Its about time this country stood up and enough is enough, our countries our beliefs our customs don't like it leave

I think I'll become a vegan and then insist that ALL fast food outlets stop serving meat or animal derived products of any kind.

I will never get anything from Subway if they think that decent people will put up with the savagery and cruelty that they condone by pandering to the superstitious. I am horrified that they would even consider it. How long will it be before our women are also required to walk about looking like they are in a lifesize Pacman game?
