A team of 17 swimmers from Gloucester Masters acquitted themselves well in the ASA National Masters Championships at the Ponds Forge pool in Sheffield.

They returned with 21 medals – 11 were gold – and with two record breaking relay swims.

Tony Cherrington was the star solo performer with a tally of seven individual golds and one  silver, having won the 800m, 400m, 200m and 100m freestyle, the 200m, 100m and 50m backstroke and taking second place by only 0.76 seconds in the 50m freestyle.

Jason Howell – a relatively new club member- took two golds in the gruelling 200m and 400m Individual Medley swims

The remaining two gold medals came from relays. The Men's 160+yrs. 4x100 freestyle relay team of Peter Smith, Jason Howell, Colin Stephenson and Ollie Barnes won in a new British Record time of 3:48.24.

The mixed 200+ yrs. 4x100 freestyle relay team of Jayne Ball, Colin Stephenson, Sandy Jones and Peter Smith won in a stunning new European Record time of 4:16.90.

A number of bronzes were taken by Stephen Weston, Peter smith, Colin Stephenson and Sandy Jones and a good number of the team managed personal bests. Nick McDowall competing in 4x25. I.M. in his new age group was unlucky to be beaten out of the medals by faster swimmers.

The preparation for this event occupies several weeks of training in the Masters Swimming calendar and other competitions along the way sharpen the performance.
