Gold Cup runner-up The Giant Bolster is set to line up at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day – over hurdles.

Stow-on-the-Wold trainer David Bridgwater’s stable star is a possible runner in the Rewards4Racing Handicap Hurdle (1.55pm).

The Giant Bolster has an official handicap rating of 159 over fences after being placed in the last two Gold Cups.

But he is rated 14lb lower over hurdles, meaning he could be well handicapped if he can produce his best form over the smaller obstacles.

The Giant Bolster hasn’t raced over hurdles since finishing fourth in a Grade Three race at Chepstow in October 2011.

However, earlier in his career he was beaten by only seventh lengths when finishing sixth to Peddlers Cross in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.
