FOSTER dad William Barber repeatedly molested a young girl while he baby-sat for her, a jury was told yesterday.

The girl's mother knew that Barber was a foster carer, along with his wife, and had trusted him to look after her daughter until she finished work, Gloucester Crown Court heard.

The girl told the jury that Barber regularly assaulted her sexually when he looked after her.

She was aged between six and eight when Barber abused her and, to her recollection, it happened regularly, she said.

"He used to babysit me," said the woman, who is now 19.

"My mum knew him and she knew he was a foster carer.

"As she knew that, she pretty much put her trust in him to look after me."

Barber, 50, formerly of Brockworth, but now of Southgate Street, Gloucester, is alleged to have sexually assaulted seven young girls and a boy between 1987 and 1999.

The prosecution say the former school caretaker was a "predatory paedophile" who preyed upon young children between the ages of five and 12.

In evidence, the woman said: "He used to get me to sit on his lap facing him with my legs either side of his waist.

"He would put his legs out and get me to lie back on them so that I was virtually upside down."

The woman sobbed as she went on: "He would put his hand up my top. At first it just used to be up my top but then he started to go down my trousers. I would cry and ask him to stop.

"Sometimes he would say 'in a minute' and other times he would tell me to go and wash my hands and face.

"He would always say 'don't tell anyone'."

The woman said that in 2003 she told her mum what had gone on and police were informed. She made a video statement to the police at that time but no action was taken.

In a separate allegation, a 19-year-old Brockworth girl claimed Barber once indecently assaulted her while visiting her home when she was about six or seven.

Defence barrister David Martin suggested that she was mixing Barber up with another of her mother's male friends.

The trial continues.
