FOREST GREEN ROVERS 3 SOUTHPORT 1
Forest Green maintained their impressive 2014 form with a convincing victory that heightens the Sandgrounders' relegation worries.
A Danny Wright double and substitute Yan Klukowski's strike secured the points for Ady Pennock's side, although Southport's John O'Sullivan netted the goal of the day at the start of the second half.
The opening goal stemmed from Forest Green's first corner, which was only half-cleared to James Norwood. His raking pass was met at the far post by Lee Hughes and dropped invitingly for Wright, who scored at the second time of asking following Anstote Nsiala's block on the line.
Seven minutes later it was 2-0, Norwood swinging over a delicious cross from the opposite flank for Wright to plant a superb header past Hurst's outstretched glove and into the net via the inside of the post.
Former Wrexham striker Wright had a glorious chance to complete a first-half treble when he soared unchallenged to meet a Hughes cross, only to flick his header wide.
And Wright was desperately unfortunate on 43 minutes when he bustled his way into the area and let fly with a volley that crashed against the underside of the crossbar.
The advantage was halved within three minutes of the restart when O'Sullivan produced a bolt from the blue, his 25-yard shot seeming to catch everybody by surprise as it rattled the underside of the bar and nestled in the net.
Norwood tried an ambitious drive from an unlikely angle before turning provider again for the third goal in the 73rd minute, whipping the ball over from the right for Klukowski to side-foot home.
