EMERGENCY building work will begin today on strengthening the walls of Voltage bar after the top part of the building started to cave in.

The listed building, once the home of Jennings printers, was in a sorry state – but recent bad weather has worsened the situation.

Bar owner Mark Watts said that it will be business as usual despite scaffolding being erected yesterday.

The scaffolding is expected to be up for around two weeks depending on the weather. It all started when cracks appeared in the walls last year.

Mr Watts said: “I want to apologise for the people who use the Motability centre behind the bar and head into town as they may have to dodge the scaffolding.

“We didn’t want to do the work over Christmas because it was a busy period and it didn’t seem right to do with a lot of people around but now everyone has gone back to work.”
