ECHO COMMENT: Government needs to back theatre as well as celebrate it

If you get the chance to make a point to the top brass, it’s always good to try to seize the opportunity.

That’s clearly what the Everyman Theatre’s chief executive Geoffrey Rowe has in mind when he attends a reception at 11 Downing Street this evening.

Culture Minister Ed Vaisey will be thanking theatres like the Everyman for the great work they do as part of a celebration of British theatre.

What Mr Rowe will say is that theatre at all levels needs more Government support if they are to continue to thrive.

It is to his credit that he will be speaking as much for other theatres as he will for the Everyman. It may have seen cuts in its local authority cash but it still receives grants from the Arts Council.

The Everyman knows its audience may have to be asked for more as well and has increased its membership fees. But the Government can’t celebrate what our theatres add to the country as a whole if it doesn’t play - and pay - its part as well.
