A DRAMATIC high-speed police chase through the streets of Gloucester came to a crashing halt in a quiet Tredworth street.

Chervill Close resident Jim Gandhi was among the shocked onlookers two suspected burglars were stopped in their tracks outside his home.

Cars were damaged and three police officers were left with minor injuries.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of burglary following the pursuit on Thursday afternoon.

A grey BMW X1, one of two cars that had been stolen in a break-in overnight on Wednesday, was spotted in Tredworth shortly before 4.30pm.

Police raced to block off escape routes and prepared stingers - used to puncture car tyres.

Traffic officers deliberately collided with the car as it drove down Chervil Close to bring it to a halt.

Mr Gandhi said: "We were just going about our normal business when we heard a big bang.

"They were lucky that no kids were killed because they usually like to play out on the streets.

"My car was hit on our driveway and it has been taken away."

Officers chased two men who ran away from the getaway car.

A short time later a 20-year-old man from Cheltenham and a 22-year-old man from Gloucester were arrested on suspicion of a burglary in Cheltenham. They were still in police custody yesterday.

A police officer suffered minor injuries in the collision and two more were injured while the arrests were made. All are now back on duty.

Suspected stolen jewellery, drugs and an axe were recovered.

Crime operations Chief Insp Paul Shorrock said: "I want to pay tribute to the officers who were involved in this pursuit.

"There was a risk to the public from the reckless driving of these people and it was the skill and bravery of the officers that brought it to a safe conclusion.

"To the members of the public who were inconvenienced by this pursuit I would like to say thank you for your patience."
