Detectives have until 2.45pm to continue questioning a man arrested on suspicion of murdering Churchdown hairdresser Hollie Gazzard.
The 22-year-old local man was arrested following the fatal stabbing of Hollie, 20.
Hollie's parents released a new picture of their beloved daughter as the investigation continued.
This morning fresh flowers have been left at the spot where the alleged attack took place - Fringe Benefits and La Bella beauty salon on Southgate Street.
Her death has shocked the city and hundreds of tributes have flooded onto social networking sites for the popular hair designer.
Hollie was stabbed to death in front of her colleagues just before 6pm on Tuesday night.
She was rushed to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital following the stabbing, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The attack was said to have left onlookers terrified and support is being offered to those who witnessed it.
Yesterday, part of Southgate Street remained cordoned off and a white tent was put up as forensic investigation continued at the scene.
Neighbours reportedly heard shouting just before the stabbing, before they saw four police cars and an ambulance arrive.
Craig Bell, 24, who lives in the city centre, said: “I’m shocked it’s happened, especially at a time when there would have been loads of people around.
“I just feel for the poor girl and her family.”
Care worker Alec Rosam, 30, who lives just across the road from the salon, said: “I was shocked. I have lived here since 2008 and I have never seen anything like this.”
Gloucestershire police said they had recovered a knife, which they believe could have been used during the killing.
Gloucester Chief Inspector, Neil Smith said: “On Tuesday afternoon, police were called to reports that a lady was being assaulted quite viciously and unfortunately she later died.
“It is a very tragic day for the city, but Gloucester is a safe place. We can confirm Hollie knew the man we have arrested and they were in a previous relationship.
“But inquiries are continuing and we are at a very early stage.
“There are members of the public that witnessed this tragic scene.
“This was a very nasty incident and we have arrested a man but we are still urging the public to come forward with any information.
“We are trying to track down everyone who has been affected by this and we are offering our support to the community that witnessed this, and also our officers who had to deal with it.”
Anyone with any information can contact Gloucestershire police on 101, quoting incident 340 of February 18.
