CHURCHDOWN School were the big winners at the Gloucestershire School Games Tennis Festival at Oxstalls Tennis Park.
The county finals saw schools across Gloucestershire compete in Years One and Two and Years Three and Four mini red tennis and Years seven to 11 projectability mini red tennis in mixed teams of two boys and two girls.
There was a double success on the day for Churchdown Village School, who won both the Years One and Two and the Years Three and Four mini red tennis.
Gotherington Primary School were runners-up in the younger age group, with Oakhill finishing second in the Years Three and Four contest.
The final between Churchdown and Oakhill was closely-contested with the mixed doubles match decider going to an extended tie break.
The final score was 11-9 to Churchdown.
The projectability mini red tennis finals provided skills based competitions in the morning, with competitive matches in the afternoon for pupils who have a disability.
Alongside the competition, the tennis coaches ran coaching for students from special schools who have more profound and complex needs.
Cirencester Kingshill A team were victorious in the projectability tennis, with their B side finishing second.
Stroud High school won the Year Seven girls doubles while the boys doubles winners were Sir Thomas Rich’s.
Oxstalls centre manager Helen Stevens said: “There has been fantastic level of support & tennis within the county this year a record with 70 schools, 143 teams & over 600 children competing in tennis.
“It’s a wonderful achievement by all”

The Tennis Festival, delivered on behalf of Active Gloucestershire by the South West Lawn Tennis Association and Oxstalls Sports Park Tennis Coaches, was the penultimate School Games competition.
