YEAR groups across Barnwood Park Arts College welcomed members from Gloucestershire Young Carers for a special assembly.

The organisation, which reaches out to young carers for ill and disabled people, secured £43,739 from the People’s Millions bid last year.

Pupils learnt about daily challenges carers face.

Della Sykes, student support mentor and assistant head of KS4, at Barnwood Park Arts College, said:

“I feel privileged to support students who show such resilience on a daily basis. We have 10 carers at school who are supported by either the charity, by school or both, we are positive that there are many more young carers who have not yet spoken out.

“I am look forward to developing the support we put in place for young carers at Barnwood Park Arts College so that students may fulfil their potential.”

A spokesman from Gloucestershire Young Carers said: “We welcome the opportunity to work with schools to assist them in the identification and support of young carers.

“We were delighted to have been given the opportunity to speak to the school and raise awareness of issues affecting young carers.”
