GLOUCESTERSHIRE Deaf Association urgently needs to raise £65,000 to ensure its community centre in Barnwood stays open once a flat-roofed extension is demolished as part of the sale of its car park.

The sale of charity’s car park in Colin Road is to release funds necessary to relieve the charity of a local government pension scheme deficit, but it comes at a cost.

The extension contains the centre’s existing washrooms and any delay to relocating washrooms to another part of the centre may force closure that could last months.

However the organisation will have to create a new, smaller car park on the other side of its building and reconfigure space within the framework of the original building to take into account the loss of the extension that currently juts on to the area to be sold.

Jenny Hopkins, chief executive of the charity, said: “This is a big challenge for us. We are anticipating the sale of the car park will release £150,000 and we have successfully applied for a £20,000 grant from Gloucestershire’s Community Buildings Fund, for which we are extremely grateful, but we are still some £65,000 short.

“We have 22 groups that use our community centre regularly, some deaf and some non-deaf related and many of those are charities that enjoy our excellent facilities at specially discounted rates.”

Over the past three years, the charity has developed its community centre into a vibrant hub, which is used by more than 300 people every week.

Jenny added: “It’s one of my proudest achievements that we have created a centre in Barnwood which not only offers excellent facilities, but is also fully disabled access.

“Having to sell the car park has been a setback, but we are going to turn this into an opportunity to make our centre even better.”

Gloucestershire Deaf Association is the frontline organisation delivering specialist services and community activities for deaf and hard of hearing adults and children in the county.
